Notes

  • Author's note: Translated from the Latin of Horace, Book I. Ode IV.
  • Epigraph: "In a word, the Greeks, and Romans are our masters in all polite literature; a consideration which of itself ought to inspire reverence for their writings and genius." - Dr Beattie's Essays "On The Utility of Classical Learning."
  • Editor's note: The classical reader need not be reminded that the concluding stanza [sub-titled 'Moral'] is not in the original. The translator deemd that the addition of her moral will not be unacceptable to those who aim after the only legitimate fruit of all study - practical instruction.
