Notes

  • Author's note: There was an old top-sail under which the Terror was hove-to for eight or nine days. The fore-topmast stay-sail made a bolt of it very soon after the gale commenced. The old veteran top-sail was unbent when the gale moderated, and had to give [its] place to a new one. Now only hear the song it sang in the sail-room. There's a moral in it: it goes to the air of "The Gispy King."
  • Author's note: November, 1848.
