  • Author's note: A young and deservedly esteemed Officer of the 96th Regiment who lost his life in his humane efforts to rescue the [Norfolk] Islanders from the wreck of the Governor Phillip, off Egg Island.
  • Epigraph: "There is a tear for all that die, A mourner o'er the humblest grave." - Byron.
  • Author's note: December, 1848.
  • The brig Governor Phillip, en route to Hobart, struck a reef near Gull Island in the Furneaux Group on the 27th of October 1848 (the reason for the discrepancy in the author's note is unclear). Sixteen lives were lost out of a total compliment of eighty-four. Liuetenant Griffith's actions helped save the lives of all but four of the forty convicts on board.
