  • Author's note: [We had two or three Whalers on board the Jane Frances, returning home to their wives and sweethearts. They were occupied during "watch below" in making stay busks of whalebone. All kinds of devices and verses were inscribed on them. I wrote the following for them, and from the number of whalebone editions, it appeared they pleased amazingly.]
