Southall, writer of children's books, speaks of his book Josh for which he received the 1971 Carnegie Medal ; his reaction to critics. He speaks of his family background, his studies and various jobs held ; how he began writing seriously at 18; joining the Air Force in 1942 and his experiences while serving overseas ; the themes of his books ; the style of Hills End.
