A woman attempts to establish a relationship with her daughter-in-law, but the young woman's defensiveness shuts her out.

A young woman rents a residence, with an attached shop, so that she can practise for her violin exams. Although she did not want the shop, she gradually becomes intrigued with it and the positive influence it may have had on the community. One night a young man appears who tells her stories about the past, including one involving her mother.

Deamer writes of the practice of suttee, but queries whether any man deserves such a sacrifice.
