Foreword: The radio serial story, 'Enemy Within', was originally written and produced by the Legionnaire Studios in Melbourne, as an exposure of espionage methods of Nazi in Australia. It was a warning to Australians to be on their guard against the enemies within. No vicious propaganda was intended against decent citizens of German blood, indeed the story shows very clearly how many Germans remained loyal to this, their adopted country, even at considerable cost to themselves.
Subsequent happenings in Poland, Norway, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, and France; in fact, throughout the world have proved the truths which were so early publicised in this great radio serial.
The intense interest exhibited by the listeners is revealed by the fact that in several capital cities the conclusion of the first series caused telephone stampedes, resulting in a second series being written. In Sydney alone it was estimated that between 1,500 and 2,000 telephone calls were received by the station broadcasting within the two days following the ending of the first series....K. L. Corr. Preamble: We should like to make it clear from the beginning that this book is intended to be an exposure of the possible espionage methods of Nazi spies in Australia. It is a warning to us all to be on guard against these enemies within. But, at the same time, no vicious propaganda is intended against decent citizens of German blood. Indeed, we hope to show how many have remained entirely loyal to this their adopted country even at considerable cost to themselves.
Every citizen must play his or her part, and no loyal citizen will shirk the responsibility of reporting suspected spies to the authorities. If they are wrong in their suspicions the authorities will soon discover it, and no harm will be done, but if they are right Australia will be well rid of another spy.
