Tatau (meaning tattoo) explores post-war Polynesian migration to New Zealand, using the ancient tradion of tattooing as a basis for storytelling.

Notes

  • The play was devised in 1995 when Zeal Theatre was invited to co-produce a new work with Christchurch-based Samoan theatre company Pacific Underground. Following a sold-out season in Auckland in 1996, the play was remounted (with assistance from the Australia Council Theatre Fund) for a season at the Pacific Wave Festival in Sydney.

  • 1996 : Aotea Centre, Auckland, New Zealand ; March. Prod. Zeal Theatre and Pacific Underground ; Dir. Stefo Nantsou. - Cast: Anton Carter, Rob Dilley, Meg Dunn, Erolia Ifopo, Oscar Knightley, Karen Lantry, Shimpal Lelisi, Mishell Muagututi'a, Stefo Nantsaou (q.v.), Joy Vaele ; Su'a Paulo Suluape III (Tattooist), Moe Siaosi and Laga Suluape (Tattooist's assistants).

    1996 : Bondi Pavilion, Sydney ; November. Cast and production mostly as for previous Auckland season.

    • Staged as part of the Pacific Wave Festival.
