In Australian Democrat : The Career of Edward William O'Sullivan 1846-1910 (1965), Bruce Mansfield describes 'a manly hero of modest origin is the rival of a wealthy cad for the hand of a squatter's beautiful and talented daughter....The acts are given titles from history - "The Pastoral Age," "The Golden Age," and "The Industrial Age" ; it is not in skirmishes with bushrangers but at the Eureka Stockade that the hero makes his name and his fortune' (p298).

Production Details

  • First produced by the Henry Dramatic Company at the Royal Standard Theatre on Easter Saturday, 1898. It was revised and produced again in June 1907 in Sydney.
