Notes

  • A ballad based on traditional tale from Christian folklore, with more or less anti-semitic overtones, about a Jew who supposedly taunted Jesus on his way to crucifixion, and was cursed to wander the earth until the second coming. Several significant French tales involving this figure were published in the nineteenth century, including Eugene Sue's Juif Errant (1844), and Edgar Quintet's Tablettes du juif errant (1823).
