AbstractHistoryArchive Description

This cultural study of the Australian book publishing industry attempts to address questions about which literary books are published and publicised, and what counts as literary culture. The thesis offers a structural analysis of the Australian publishing industry, then addresses the role of the Australia Council and the implications of government patronage, literary awards and festivals, and regulatory practices such as copyright and censorship.
