This thesis was the first attempt to research book editing in Australia. It attempts to assess the importance of book editors in the standards and evolution of contemporary Australian book publishing, to examine the influences which affect a book editor's work in Australia, and to look at the way the nature of the Australian book publishing industry has shaped book editing attitudes.
