AbstractHistoryArchive Description

This thesis examines the development of book publishing in Australia until the early 1970s. It considers the British cultural and commercial hegemony, and the structural mechanisms that supported it and allowed British publishers to dominate the Australian industry until the 1960s. It traces the development of a local industry throughout this period and the eventual transition in Australia from 'traditional' to 'modern' publishing.
