Notes

  • Dedication: for Chris Wallace-Crabbe.
  • Author's note: 'Whistler's Boatman' was written after a conversation with Chris Wallace-Crabbe, the dedicatee of this poem, about the paintings of James Whistler. He told me this story of Whistler's boatman, who, inspired by his passenger, decided to try his hand at painting. Whistler himself was derided for the titles he chose for his paintings, and the quotation [in the poem] regarding his 'Symphony in White' appears in Colour: Travels through the Paintbox, by Victoria Finlay.
