Notes

  • Author's note: Dickson prefaces the poem with an extract from 'the Australian, a Sydney paper' which describes an attack by Maoris on 11 March 1845, led by Heki, 'a Christian and a man of noble nature'. Heki objected to the raising of the British flag over a settlement because this was a symbol of the subjection of his country to the British.
