Author's note: Some of my colleagues in psychiatry seek the truth in the cold impartiality of statistical analysis. This movement grows apace, month by month; but I am not of it. I know of no measure for the depth of despair or the height of elation or the breadth of understanding. So I would prefer to write of it in this way. Maybe it is all very simple, but this is the way the truth comes in psychiatry, just as simple and uneven as the story is. This is the magic.
