Notes

  • A brief overview of the Christy Minstrels' evening of variety for 25 August, it records: 'That curious jumble of entertainment - operatic, dramatic, and ecstatic - given by the present set of Christy's Minstrels at the Polytechnic Hall continues as it deserves, to draw good houses.... The performance on Saturday night consisted of a good selection of songs, catches and choruses, some capital burlesque dancing, an extraordinary effort of acrobatic violin-playing, which everyone ought to witness, and the nigger opera of Mary Tanner, the airs in which would not sound altogether strange to the admirers of Wallace's best composition. Leslie played a prominent part in the performance - a sufficient token that it was not deficient in genuine humour and irresistible drollery'.
