  • Initially published in the Queensland Daily Guardian with the title 'A Man and a Brother'.
  • This poem is largely a satire on Europeans within colonial society who held sympathetic attitudes towards Aboriginal people. Here the idealised Aboriginal 'chieftain' is duly mocked and ridiculed as a beggar and fringe-dweller.
