A tragic romance dealing with the mysteries of local witchcraft. It also describes the scenery of the Channel Islands and has historical and judicial details.

  • McKellar's most interesting work. At the headings of some of chapters, he quotes from Adam Lindsay Gordon's poems. He enriches the book with many quotations from, and literary annotations of, poems and songs in the Jersey dialect.(Miller)
  • Dedication: A lengthy dedication to Baroness Frieda Von Bulow.
  • Preface discusses the existence of witchcraft.
