Notes

  • Epigraph: 'Oh God! O Montreal!' Samuel Butler.
  • Author's note: The intensive annotation of this ode is due to the opinion expressed by an editor that the work was above the heads of his public. With the assistance of our notes we trust the public will now be able to place their feet comfortably upon it. Any further elucidations required will be provided if correspondents will supply full name and address (not necessarily for publication) and a stamp.
  • Hugh Anderson in Frank Wilmot (Furnley Maurice) A Bibliography and a Criticism (1955) asserts: 'First appeared anonymously in M.U.M. (Melbourne University Magazine), September 1933 under the title 'Ottawar! An Ode in Bewilderment', but was revised for subsequent publication.'
