  • Author's note: The subject of this ballad is taken from an account of a young knight, Allan le Zouch, at the siege of Caerlaverock, who bore a banner set with five byzants.
  • This appears to be the same 'Banner of Five Byzants', by Laetitia Elizabeth Landon, that appears in the 1828 English literary annual, Friendship's Offering.
