Notes

  • A review of Oscar Asche's return to his most famous role, that of Abu Hasan/Chu Chin Chow. The review includes a principal cast list.

The critic writes of the revival's premiere : 'Mr Oscar Asche yesterday sought to exert the ancient sway by reproducing this masque orinetale... It was something like setting a trap to catch a dream. One would hesitate to say that the experiment was not a success..... it is [however] pantomime in its highest dimension [and] it can throw down a challenge upon any of three grounds or all - artistry of conception, opulence of creation, and wit and wisdom of dialogue... Through circumstances it may have been necessary for Chu Chin Chow to be potted, but its real essence has been preserved' (14).
