Notes

  • Title continues: 'At the Picnic of "the Sailors' Home" Held at Clontarf, Middle Harbour, on 12th March, 1868
  • The assassination attempt on Prince Alfred (1844-1900), the first member of the British royal family to visit Australia, was carried out by Henry James O'Farrell, an Irish-Australian recently released from a mental institution. The attack prompted a wave of anti-Irish sentiment, and O'Farrell, despite his questionable sanity, was hanged after a short trial.
