Notes

  • Author's note: The following tale was written by me during some solitary evenings while on a station in the interior, thirty odd years ago; not for the purpose of publication at the time, but merely for pastime and my own amusement, in recounting scrapes and wild freaks committed by my fellow-squatters during the early days of Port Phillip. Readers will therefore please forgive any deficiencies they may find therein. - Preface
  • The events in this novel take place along the Murray River, though it is probable that the author's early experiences in Gippsland are transposed to the new locality. An incident in the novel, where Aborigines attack a squatter's house, is similar to a real event at a Gippsland property called 'Glencoe'.
