Introduction: 'Down the Breakie is a vivid and immediately appealing series of stories that make up a novel about a boy growing to manhood in Newcastle, New South Wales, in the 1930s and 1940s, with a post-script from after the Second World War.' Geoffrey Dutton.

  • Editor's note: 'William Olson's manuscript was close to completion when he died in 1975. The manuscript was revised in 1987 with new material added by the author's son, W.G. Olson. The additional chapters however are firmly based on notes the author wrote before he died.' W.G. Olson.
