The title of this short story is taken from an early 17th century folk ballad called "The Three Ravens," in which three scavenger birds converse about where and what they should eat. A similar, but more cynical version is known as "Twa Corbies" ("The Two Ravens" or "The Two Crows"). The word "sall" is an early English form of the word "shall." The word "mair" is also sometimes spelled "maire."
