Notes

  • Rotten Borough was withdrawn only three weeks after it was first published in 1937, having become the subject of libel actions. The book satirised life in provinical Grantham, the hometown of such dignitaries as Lord Brownlow of Belton House and, later, Margaret Thatcher. Rotten Borough was re-issued in 1989 with the subtitle, The Real Story of Mrs Thatcher's Grantham.
