19th-Century Australian Travel Writing
William Osborne Lilley (1839-1914) travelled from Gravesend to Melbourne, keeping a passenger log on the voyage. Bound For Australia On Board the Orient is a description of the daily experiences of passengers on a large steamship, rather than a travel narrative consisting of observations of Australia. In his preface, Lilley stated that it was intended to give guidance to potential steamship travellers. Lilley had previously published The Brothers Turville, Sheen from My Thought Waves, Robert Raikes and Poor James.
