Coy Wilberforce is excitedly waiting for the guests who are coming to her sixteenth birthday party. In particular she is waiting for Arnold Nicholson, but when he arrives he is far more interested in another girl. An older man, Michael Kent, notices her distress and gives her some wise advice.
Favershaw has fled to North Queensland after being rejected on the morning of his wedding. One evening he throws the ring far out into the mangrove swamp. Several years later the ring turns up again and leads to a new romance.
