Notes

  • A poem in 9 numbered parts.
  • Editor's note: Wallace Stevens (1879-1955), one of America's finest poets, worked life-long as an insurance executive. He first visited Cuba in 1923. Meyer Lansky (1902-1983) was the Mafia's chief deal-maker and the strategist in Havana after 1930. The best and the worst: the poem imagines them meeting in 'the Jewel of the Antilles'.
