Notes

  • Author's note: Professor Murdoch, in illustrating the misleading nature of the phrase "Dawn of modern democracy", told the story of a rooster who accompanied an exploration party on their journey to the North Pole. The latter (ie the rooster) crowed so long that he died from sheer exhaustion while the dawn was still dawning.
