  • Author's note: George Steiner wrote in Real Presences that deep-sea divers tell of a certain depth at which the human brain becomes possessed of the illusion that natural breathing is possible again. When this happens the diver removes his helmet and drowns. He is inebriated with a fatal enchantment called ' the vertigo of the great deeps.'
