Notes

  • This novel was published shortly after Innes's departure from Australia in 1945 and may have been written during his residence in Australia.
  • This tale of a conspiracy involving post-war art theft features a criminal character referred to as both 'Birdsong' and 'Vogelsang'. Vogelsang was the name of the South Australian police officer who questioned Max Harris about the Ern Malley poems published in Angry Penguins; Vogelsang and 'Innes' (Professor J. I. M. Stewart) both testified in the subsequent Harris obscenity case.
