Notes

  • The essay quotes a letter from Nancy Francis about her method of educating her daughters: 'I never gave them fixed lessons for long. It was arithmetic one time, and another subject when convenient; but chiefly reading.... You can imagine it all, perhaps - the children in the jungle by the creek, or lying in the long grass in the forest, watching the orchids, the birds and butterflies, reading, dreaming, and writing and acting plays.'
  • Includes portrait photographs of Patricia and Nancy Francis.
