Jimmie has been working long hours and is very tired when he arrives back at his new boarding house late at night. He stumbles into what he thinks is his room and is confronted by a girl with a gun.
Charles Hawkins aspires to Shakespearian acting, but the theatre company he worked for has collapsed and he and his wife, Maida, are living in poverty. Maida wants to accept an offer from her family to work on their station, but Charles is clinging to his daydreams. Then something happens that brings him back to reality.
May relates her conversations with Jean Devanny, including one with Nancy Francis and one of her daughters present. Devanny talks about how she began writing and how she found a publisher. Includes a number of biographical details.
