  • Author's note: Captain, a noted pit pony, worked in the Big Ryesholm Pit, Dalry, for over 16 years, and during that period, it was alleged by those who said they knew, did not see daylight. He was a most affectionate animal, and in consequence of such was allowed to perform more than his fair share of work. Between his regular driver and the pony there existed an understanding canny-human, and the equine showed resentment if another driver took him in charge.
