Notes

  • Epigraph: The conditions under which the Lothian colliers worked during the eighteenth century have no more cruel, execrable parallel in the world's annals of slavery. The evidence brought forward at the Royal Commission on the Employment of Children in the Mines of Great Britain, 1841, disclosed a horrible and nauseating state of slavery. - Loanhead, 1885.
