AbstractHistoryArchive Description

This article is an account of Meston's third expedition to Bellenden Ker, from December 1891 to 28 January 1892. He was accompanied by three Pacific Islanders and by the Italian scientists, Podnezana and Schiffini, who sponsored the expedition. Meston discusses the effects on the district of a recent major flood. He speculates on the significance of a circular ground cleared by Aborigines, and describes his discovery of Garcinia Mestoni, a mangosteen new to science. He tells how the majesty of the scenery inspired his companions to sing arias from operas.
