Notes

  • Author's note: The Nursery at the Female Factory in Hobart Town was closed down in 1838 because of the high mortality rate in both mothers and infants, which was probably due to inadequate diet, enforced weaning and poor medical treatment. John Gould's wife, Elizabeth, stayed with the Franklins when pregnant with their second child, while Gould travelled to New South Wales to collect bird specimens. She gave birth to this child at Government House.
  • The poem is written in the first person voice of Lady Jane Franklin.
