Notes

  • Dedication: For my daughter Claire and son Leo - the freedom to speak our thoughts without fear is precious - keep it safe.
  • Epigraph: In the Spring of 1793, the unity of revolutionary France was crumbling. Ringed by enemy monarchies and ravaged by dissent within, the inexperienced government, brimful with idealism, was struggling to equip its armies and feed its people.
