Basing her study on Gao's play 'Taowang' ('Fleeing') Lee discusses the political and social pressures on Chinese writers, including the pressure to be acclaimed a hero, and Gao's insistence on the importance of fleeing from these pressures and being true to oneself both as a person and as a writer.
