Includes the aristocratic Spanish owner of the Philadelphia Hotel (an élite gambling den), and his beautiful sister Antonio, the Irish Kirwans and Joe Dunlea, Kevin Conway (the Times editor); MPs; romantic, brave and faithful ladies; mesmerism; piracy; murder etc. Interesting for its treatment of violent and bloody sports and the involvement of women in its political, sporting and social concerns.
