AbstractHistoryArchive Description

Family romance set in a Victorian township in the 1870s. Revolves around the Hartford family; a handsome young doctor; a squatter's son, possible heir to an English title; and their fellow townspeople. A church bazaar, a letter goes astray, a child death which reconciles estranged father and son, and romantic twists galore constitute this varied, often amusing and socially observant tale. Includes comments on fairytales; the vicar Mr Chilsoul; the Ladies Benevolent Society and its distribution of tracts without charity. (PB)
