'1856, and Ella, the daughter of a widowed Devon gentleman, travels to Paris to see her older brother, Arthur, in company with three other ladies, one of them – Florence – her own age. After pleasure, a riding accident, and Florence's engagement, she returns to England and, in 1858, becomes engaged herself – to her younger brother's friend.' (PB)
