Tale of England and France in the days of the Crusades. Isabella d'Angoulême is betrothed to Henry de Lusignan but John of England desires her hand and it appears she must submit. Her cousin, Marie, daughter of France's King Philip, is engaged to Prince Arthur of Britain. On the way to marry Henry, Isabella is abducted by Queen Ellinor, John's mother, and forcibly married to him. The fortunes of the French and English courts continue, John being the villain who after causing great sufferings and misery, meets a fittingly grotesque end. (PB)
