Notes

  • Author's note: 'On the western slopes of the Gallipoli Peninsula, just above where the first landing of the Australian troops was successfully effected, there lies a small cemetery in which are the graves of about 500 soldiers (Australasian). On top of the grave of a Victorian boy, is a small stone bearing the following epitaph:

    'Halt! comrades, halt, as you pass by
    As you are now, so once was I.
    As I am now, so you will be,
    So, comrades, be prepared to follow me.'

    This beautiful inscription, carved by the hands of loving comrades, together with the many touching scenes there witnessed, suggested the following lines to the writer'
