'The tale opens in June 1854 with Frank Hartley making a very sad farewell to his friend Harry Andrews before departing for Australia. Frank is engaged to Mary Mordaunt and leaves her in Harry's care. A false Australian friend of Frank's tells him that Harry has betrayed his trust; Frank returns to England for vengeance and tragedy ensues.' (PB)
