The tale opens in a fishing village on the Suffolk coast of England. Mary Adamson and Harry Graham love each other but Mary's father is determined she shall marry young Fynkel, the Dutch/Spanish son of a smuggle who trades with the father. He succeeds in separating the lovers but is implicated in the murder of a customs officer. Harry returns to claim Mary on the morning of her wedding to young Fynkel, and secrets are revealed ...
