The career of A.W. Jose spanned political journalism, literary authorship, academic scholarship and editorial revision. Appointed by George Robertson, Jose reviewed Angus & Robertson manuscripts and edited key publications, including The Australian Encyclopedia. This thesis examines the influences which shaped his emerging vision of Australia and his contribution to Australian literary culture at a crucial time in the development of Australian nationhood.
