AbstractHistoryArchive Description

On the decaying diggings of Garraloop in Victoria, John Stapleton (the Baron) and Ned Roxlegh are mining partners and both a little in love with Kitty Martin, the store-keeper's daughter. They discover promise of gold in an old shaft. Ned proposes to Kitty on a picnic and is rejected - she loving the Baron - which spurs Ned to hate him. A mining company is floated in the town, and Ned attacks Jack at their mine. Kitty rescues Jack from a later attack and nurses him back to health. They marry and eventually Ned writes to them and is forgiven. (PB)
